When these ships were the norm, they were not known as Tall Ships. The term only became popular in the 20th Century, after John Masefield wrote the nautical poem "Sea Fever" -
'I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, ............'
